Clik here to view.As anyone in the content marketing or SEO industry will tell you, Google’s search algorithms are constantly changing and refining so that the service is able to deliver the most useful results to users. Recently, Google made a small change to search engine results pages (SERPs) that could have a big impact on the way we consume content online.
In the past, Google had displayed relevant news content for your search query through ‘News for’ – a selection of news content displayed above other, non-news results. However, it appears that Google is rolling out a change to this section. It is now called ‘in the news,’ and as well as displaying content from news sites, the feature also displays ‘newsworthy’ content from around the web. This includes sites such as Reddit – where content is submitted by and voted on by users – and blog content.
The change will bring more variety to the SERP. It’s bad news for traditional news websites such as the BBC and the Telegraph, but is great news for every other site on the web. Any site that is able to produce content that Google deems ‘newsworthy’ has the chance to appear in this prominent position on the SERP, improving traffic and potentially boosting takings.
This move provides another great boost for content marketing teams. Although the authority of a website is still considered in Google’s search algorithms, this change is an acknowledgement that non-traditional news sources can provide valuable content.
